View Full Version : Southdown - Auckland
Couple of guys posted a link to the TradeMe site where they had the Southdown facility available.
We were there today, and the place is gi-friggin'-normous. Three main rooms (Two lower level one upper) Massive amounts of carpark and a serviceable ramp into the facility (So you can actually drive into the main gaming area)
Also. Two main entrys (Ramp, aswell as a doorway leading from a railway tunnel) We are able to use the railway tunnel to assault INTO the building.

Short video clip. details the three big rooms.
We spent about an hour and a half there today just marking out possible hazards. We cordoned off probably twenty odd rooms, and there's still an entire maze of little arsed corridors and hidey-holes everywhere.
50+ people.
Bad Karma will be looking into hosting a game there on 28/06/2008
We'll be tidying the place up making it serviceable and installing lighting aswell.
The map is NOT to scale and doesent show absolutely everything. But its a fair idea of what its like

oh great.
they have finally allowed people to come in and play in that area?
FAN BLOODY TASTIC.
There is also a door (high) in the lower west corner area (using your maps as north) that leads out to.. well.. ermm. about 3 stories of space/air.
There are obstacles a plenty.. a rack room, also a long corridor that connects one area to another.. there was a lot of rubble and junk there before.
Plenty of natural light, but areas where it is pitch black.. and you really need a torch.

Does anybody use night vision devices in NZ?
Yeah wege we saw that spot out onto the rooves
Problem is somebody's built a house up there, so i dont think they'd enjoy us running around outside their windows :P
Yeah i was looking out the window onto the rooftops with the pillars etc thinking "Man that'd be an uber place for a sniper"
Then i saw the picnic table, bbq and umbrella outside a portacom-looking house

There will be a loads of out of bounds areas there are a few places that look cool but are way to dangerous to play in, there is going to be strict rules based around people going into out of bounds areas as an accident could see the whole place lost to us all and probably some kind of buddy system, if someone went out of the playing area and fell down a hole we would probably never find you.
You can refer to my map above as to the photos

Catwalks

These pillars are to the right of the above photo and are part of the long chillers

in the same room as the catwalks, looks like it would make a great bunker/base
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y292/chaospunk/sd4.jpg
This is taken on the upper level, the part i've marked as possible base area on my map.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y292/chaospunk/sd5.jpg
This is the ramp, shoot from the upper level.
There's a whole rats-nest of locker rooms, toiletries etc that we havent put up
Some will be cordoned off. Others will be used
Cant stress the safety enough. In one area the ceiling/Floor for the level above has just about collapsed. We didnt get a photo of it, but seeing a 5-metre wide by 10-15 metre long room with the ceiling sagging by nearly 2 metres is a pretty freaky sight.

Yeah we probably need to run a buddy system of some sort, so everyone can be accounted for at each break and at the end of the day.

Awesome work guys. Looks freakin awesome and would love to play a game in there. Haven't been to Southdown in ages.
For the areas that would need to be out of bounds due to safety and falling ceilings are you allowed to spray paint signs onto the concrete or atleast put up semi-permanant signs?
With it being wet and cold in there paper signs would probably disappear quickly and also not be noticed.

yeah problem is its used by other people, and we can't block access as the doors could be used by others, i was thinking danger tape, lots of it so it can be replaced easy if its ripped down, just staple it up.

yea, danger tape would be good. just thinking for those that don't look where they are going or if its kind of dark a little piece of A4 paper with DON'T ENTER would probably not work

oh thats a shame, that would of been awesome but can't win them all :)
still good work guys and looking forward to the game.
After talking with Joe, it is actually possible to go from that field to the other field through the buildings.
However alot of the rooms you'd have to go through are blocked off for safety reasons. So unfortunately. :(
Yeah there is some pretty dodgy area's there. Even a spot where Joe's dog fell down and broke its legs.

He's supplying us with old crates, drums etc.
