Just thought i would chuck this up in this forum too.
Heres a couple of STAR L1A1 rifles that myself and a teammate put together. Kind of a carbine and marksman thing going on.

Some stats:
- Both fire about 500fps through various upgrades.
- Run on 11.1V Lipo batts
- Have STAR L1A1 top cover scope mounts
- Chopped barrels and re-threaded. (Marksman version has the inner right through the suppressor.
- Painted in a realistic manner
- Bipod mount for the marksman version
Pretty accurate rifles and have been fun to build.
Enjoy (although you purist guys will hate them)

i love these.
Paint done with an airbrush? its really nice, how well does it work in a game though?

Paint is done by a paint technique called dry brushing.
The paint works very well, i know it looks very light but its supprising how brown and light most of our fields are. I prefer it over a green type paint job.

Yeah, i pretty much get painted what i can and re-stain wood and wear down metal on things like my AK's. Not a big fan of anything "fresh out of the box" looking.
Delta, can you post a description of how you did the paintjob? I am fimiliar with drybrushing (ex modeller) but would like to give it a go after getting any hints and tricks you may know?

liking the paint jobs very similar to what the Rhodesian raiders did to theirs

The paint was done by a C6 teammate, he does the model painting thing too, so im guessing its a common technique.
From what i saw, the paint is applied to a decent sized brush and wiped on a towel until basically nothing is left on it, then wiped on the back of the hand to check. Then the brush just gets moved across the surface fast , back and foward and it slowly changes color... magic!
This is done using only 2 colors of paint.
Its done to basically look like most soldiers paint their rifle. It might look a little light but its better than a big black rifle. Especially since these are so long.
I will add another pic to the post and plan to take some pictures with a better camera as soon as i can.

yeah dry brushing is a common modeling technique. I often thought if i was gonna paint a gun its how id do it. It tends to be alot more resistant to flaking and wear as well as having a softer look to it

nice, very nice.
would'nt wanna lay them on the ground at our field to take a piss, could loose them easy (nearly did that once when I lent the AK against a tree & went for a leak)

May I ask why you chose a STAR L1A1 instead of the King Arms L1A1 or FN FAL?
Dorian

The star is, as far as I know, the most realistic SLR in the airsoft world. Also they are made factory semi, kings arms isnt.
and they are all round good guns. Shoot hard and often straight

Yeah they dont need much in the way of upgrades, a new motor is a good idea as we burnt out the stock ones on both.
Also yes, factory semi, and hey they are SLR's so that = cool
Only major problem is that they seem to come all with bent barrels and flash hiders (therefore they both got the chop) . This has been the case with all i have seen and all needed a fix, especially in the sight block where the front outer barrel meets the rest of the outer barrel.
Also removal of the carry handle is a must for that NZ look ;)

Oh Delta, the two down here didn't have that problem, no idea why, perhaps they are a second batch?
As for why the Star one, up until recently you could only get the Star brand one as far as I am aware. The KA one was the FAL, which is essentially the full-automatic version (plus several other differences, all very minor)

Doesnt help that cakes one is a super duper upgraded one with all the trimmings and the kitchen sink attached.
But i rarely get a wierd angle shot due to a bent barrel the shot have been popping wide alot recently but thats down to it being so wet and rainy recently barrel full o' water.

Nice work! paint job is great. and the scope is nice and big ;)

Hmm i got mine when they were first released so maybe they have sorted the barrel issue, but all the ones i saw in Auckland had the same issue, some were fixed, some got chopped.
I find that you can get wide shots because the hop up unit and barrel will actually move side to side under the rings that hold it down. This can be sorted with some tape (you will see what i mean if you have a look) :)
But with a new motor and spring, 500fps good to go, although i will admit my hopup rubber is slowly destroying itself...

you need a harder hop rubber, but then you'd know that, if i recall you've got a shiteload more experience than i haha
DELTA

Yeah problem is finding a hopup rubber that fits the SLR....
