Hey there everybody, the names Nick (but you can call me t3h n00b if you prefer :D).

After tagging along to a PAC(I think it was a PAC game) night game bout a month ago at 'the farm' I decided this airsoft business seems quite fun and I'm looking to join MUPAC (the Massey Uni branch of PAC) and pretty much just have to hand in the rego form and some cash. I've also PM'd Adrian as he was on the contact list in the new players in welly/palmy thread (and hes listed in my little MUPAC booklet as being the armourer?).

So Just thought I'd say Hi and get to know everyone here, and maybe ask a few questions befitting of my n00bling status.

First things first I need gear, I have a rough idea of what I want, but just thought I'd get some opinions/suggestions on if its a good choice and where is a good place to get them and reasonable prices:

Camos (open too sugestions, but I was eyeing up a nice set of Flecktarn). Theres a set on trademe for about 120$ buy now & shipping, does anyone know a better/cheaper place to get them?

Camo matching(preferably) molle vest or something to hold spare mags and other fun stuff (or a just a regular vest\harness if molle vests are too costly).

Drop Leg Holster that can take a sig p226 with a m3 style accessory mounted (although I'm considering getting one of those m6 laser/light combos if/when its economical). Saw a "Tornado" open style one that I think could on trademe for 40$.

Some good safety goggles (I'm ok with paying a bit more for better quality, and want proper goggles instead of glasses as tac goggles look cooler  and they are safer as well). Was looking at some ESS profiles (very cool and can supposedly withstand a shotgun blast from close range ) but they cost a deposit on a house :S, also looking at a few others (bolle x800, revision desert locust, etc..).

As for everyones favorite part (guns), after plenty of research I've decided to go after a TM p226r, galaxy mp5k (either the plain or charger variety), and a jg BAR-10. Depending on the cost of gear I may leave the Sig or mp5k till later (probably the Sig given its a gbb and its been pretty cold lately, and the mp5k makes a pretty mean sidearm too :D). Later on when finances permit a Star g36K is on the list.

So that about sums it up I guess... Opinions and advice are welcome (from those of you left standing after my merciless barrage of "iz gud by?" questions.

Cheers
Nick

hey Nick!

you don't have to worry about getting anything for awhile. get to know your self first (as in playing style)
they'll lend you the essentials, and make decisions later. I've bought a horrible amount of stuff and just sold it on because it just wasn't what i was after. you lose money doing that. i wouldn't recomended it:P

so yea, just head along and have fun, then decide what you want:)

Welcome aboard.

Flecktarn is good, seems to work on most NZ fields. Not sure if that stuff on TM is real or asian knockoffs though.

Bolle x800's are good, lighter framed style than some of the hardcore goggles. Good peripheral vision too.

As to webbing, holsters etc my advice would be play a few games see what style of game you like playing and buy that stuff then. New players often chuck a lot of money at that stuff only to find it was the wrong buy.

Things like guns (and the related accessories) I don't mind waiting for, but I got a bit of cash lying around, and a steady enough stream of it coming in to keep me going, so I don't mind spending a bit.

I'm also a firm believer in spending a bit more for quality where its warranted, ESPECIALLY when taking something up. I know its not the usual advice (get cheap in case you don't like it), But with a lot of stuff I think its better to get decent equipment (within reason) cause bad stuff can ruin your experience and leave a bad taste that might put you off.

[TANGENTIAL RAMBLE]Guitars is a good example, Begged my dad for years to get me an electric guitar and he always told me if I wanted I had to get a cheap acoustic (and those things are horrible to play:eek::eek:). After years he finally caved though and got me a squire and I loved it (I still cant stand playing on cheap acoustics though).[/TANGENTIAL RAMBLE]

How do the Bolle's handle fogging? I tend to get pretty hot n sweaty easily when I start running (I swear it has nothing to do with me having sat on my butt for the last 4 years studying and eating University cafe food ). The loner glasses I borrowed last time fogged up something chronic and that combined with the fact it was dark (usually is at night:p) made it pretty difficult to see, and thats a situation I'd like to avoid in future if possible:D

Of all the goggles and safety glasses I have tried the bolles fog the least for me. But they do still fog if there is no airflow. So when moving its all good, but once I have warmed up staying still where there is no wind starts the fogging.

Amoki has some of those ESS built in fan jobies, think he has had some success with them but they are very pricey.

That they are. Whats the profile like on the bolle's? I'm pretty keen to get a g36k later on in my airsofting career and I hear they have the worlds most horrible eye relief on the carry handle scope, So I'd probably need some fairly low profile goggles.

It's pretty good. In the pic below from top to bottom safety glasses, Bolle x800's and Bolle Defenders. x800's are 20mm wide, Defenders are 40mm.

hi there nick,

im new to the sport myself and the first thing i wanted ws a rifle the thin you have to consider is how slow at shooting and how much you have to learn about stealth and tactics so i recomend go to a game first and hve a go (i know you have but with a rifle?)

ESS i have these goggles with out a fan and well they fog something cronic at the games i attended i used a paintball style mask with the lense taken out and and replace with meshing this was awesome!!! althought when it does rain you have to squint abit as the rain goes in your eyes!

if the ESS gogges you are looking at have different colour lenses thy are great i have 3 to go to mine they are good for all conditions, by the way SIG P226 ARE MINT

If your after flecktarn head over to the army surplus store in Bulls, the guy there has heaps of the stuff and it's a lot cheaper than whats on trademe.

Holster: Save up for a Safariland 6004 for a P226+M3. These holsters are custom-molded so they are very model specific. Cost-wise, you are looking at around NZ$150+ landed from America if you pay the RRP. Pricey, but that will be the last holster you will ever need less you want to go the SERPA way. I don't have any experience with other holsters that can hold tactical light, but I'm sure there are less pricey alternatives out there - although whether you can do 2-sec primary-to-secondary transition with them are another entirely different matter. Bottom line, you pay for what you get.

Goggles: Any glass that are ANSI Z87.1+ rated and MIL-STD-662E rated will withstand a shotgun pellet blast. :)

I have the ESS Profile Turbofan, but they still condense up on me quite a bit. I have to reapply Fogtech every hour or so to keep the condensation away. Then again, I am the sort of guy who struggles to run past 4KM. :( More unfit you are, the more you sweat, and more fogging/condesation you get.

Arena Flakjaks has a good rep as well - I recently ordered a couple of pairs for myself, an LOD member, and someone from APA. Haven't field tested yet, but this baby has a lot of ventilation port, and cost you around NZ$35-50 landed per piece.

IF you are not playing CQB/MOUT games, stick with shooting/ballistic glasses. Guarder C4s can be had for under $50 on trademe, but if you are the sweaty type you might want to try the ESS ICE which can be had from Tactical Soution NZ for under $100 if I remember correctly. The C4 has quite a bit of foam which traps moisture and will cost condensation/fogging - I 've seen this happening to at least 2 LOD members. Otherwise pay a bit more from ebay and get yourself a set of Oakleys M-Frame SI Ballistics :D

MOLLE vest - you are looking around NZ$75-150 landed, but usually a sewn-on vest is good enough for airsofting, unless you are really picky about where your pouches are positioned etc. A LBE can be had from ebaybanned on the cheap.

Camo is field-dependant. 2 ASA members once shot each other while I was prone on the ground in USMC MARPAT while they were hunting me down because the dominant colour in MARPAT (Coyote Brown) blended well with the ground, but that was in the the woods up North here. DPM works surpisingly well as well up north as well, but in some fields Multicam works too.

Find out the dominant colour in the PAC field(s), that choose your camo as appropirate. Easiest way though is to just go with what the other guys in PAC are wearing and wear them.

Thanks guys for the replies.

Nematode, those x800s look like they have a pretty good profile.

I borrowed an m14 full metal AEG, I have no problem with heavy guns (Like Boris says, is sign of reliability, and if you run out of ammo you can hit him with it :P) and I definitely prefer to take my shots when they come, as opposed to the spray and pray methodology. Plus Given the lack of auto fire in NZ, i don't see the bolt action as being THAT much of a disadvantage give you have some practice at bolt cycling. Not to mention I plan on having a semi auto side arm to go with that bolt action.

Cheers Amoki for all the info. I'm a little dubious to getting one of those molded type holsters as it means I'm restricted to the one gun type (in case I ever build a collection), and if its molded it might not take the m6 light/laser combo I was looking at because of the little laser part at the bottom.

mr man, Where abouts exactly in bulls is the army surplus store? I've only been there once when I was like 10 so I don't exactly know my way around too good :P

Kinda reminds me of the first episode of Aqua teen hunger force lol.

Ok if you have the money and itching to buy something, grab some eye protection and camo before buying a gun. The reason i say this is there is quite a good amount of kit out there at your local group(palmy?). Most people will be accommodating in letting you have a look/feel of the gear and you maybe able to fire some rounds too.
