Hi, I've just discovered Airsoft existed and would love to see it up close and personal. I live just outside Whakatane and was surprised to see how many clubs are up and running so close by. I've never handled any firearms before, but I'm keen to learn and get into this.

No worries. I had no idea how widespread Airsoft was, so it's cool to see it in other areas.

Where can I pick up airsoft guns and equipment around Whakatane? I tried Hunting & Fishing but one of the guys said they couldn't sell me one without a firearms license. I thought anyone over 18 could own an airgun without a license, but maybe they can exercise discretion of some sort. Hamill's in Rotorua were awesome. They sold me my first bow set no trouble.

Is there anywhere else I can check out?

airsoft and airguns are legal to folks over the age of 18.
You MAY need to show a proof of age, however. If you look like you are 25 or so, I believe that you should be 'carded' :)

I've got proof of age and definitely don't look like a kid, but the guy insisted on a firearms license. On the other hand, Hammil's offered immediate and courteous service in whichever air rifle I wanted. Wasn't sure what to get though.

Go back to the shop and correct him, when i went into the local police station to get the Arms Code a policeman told me that you had to be 18. Just shows they dont always get it right. You would think working at a hunting and fishing shop (or being a cop) that they would get it right

Its all cool dude just come and play a few games with us we have loan guns and gear for you to try out befor you buy anything, If you get off on the sport and hang in we can get way better deals for you than the sports shops, my advice is dont buy any thing yet untill you have been to a few games and talked with a few of the crew as they will help you heaps more than the shop people who dont play the sport and have a very limitted amount of knowledge on Air Soft. Cheers Falcs PM sent.:)

Thanks Falcon! That would be really cool. I hope you've got gear that will fit. I've seen some segments on Airsoft at Youtube and it looks intense. Short of being an extreme adrenaline junkie, it's just the sort of outdoor and active hobby I'd like to pick up.

It could just be a store policy at hunting at fishing, trying to stop people who shouldn't have them getting their hands on them.

Yeah. Can't argue with that. Especially after the death of Sgt. Don Wilkinson.
