There is a huge variety of prices depending on what brand it is.
Personally I wouldn't buy an M4/M16 based gun as a club gun anyway as there is much better and cheaper options out there.
You can spend anything from $250 for a cheaper chinese m4 to several thousand on some highly upgraded guns (or a systema PTW :p).
If an M4 isnt absolutely essential, you could look at a JG G36c, which would be at the lower end of that range ($300 ish) and they come at a decent FPS (350) stock, and are pretty damn reliable which is ideal when being lent out frequently :)
--Edit to save another post--
ASGC is a good shop, no doubt about it, however you are paying a premium for a gun that is allready in New Zealand and from a retailer. SRC is also a pretty fancy brand to be lending out to newer people (do they really care whether it is full metal, has RIS etc.) :)

Yeah, ive a lot to learn, seams most need tweaking out of the box, ASGC here in auckland have a few on their web site(src), but not sure about the price.I dont want to buy a cheapish then up grade so will bite the bullet and get something decent, but with our dollar crap at the moment it could be a hard ask.

you will always have to change things, if you really want an m4 trust me ics or src gen3, either way its up to you but those 2 are the ones ive seen and heard good thing about and also G&P

I got a gen2 SRC M4 and have had no problem what so ever, they come ready to take a 400+ spring but have not put mine in yet, as I have no idea about the mechbox, just depends how you treat your weapon and how well you look after it

ICS rocks! reviewing a few at the moment, will post result soon as it's done! If you aren't in a hurry to buy, worth the wait to find out about ICS.

I'm also looking at an M4 style shooter.
looking at the pricing on sites ICS's are a bit more expensive than SRC's are - are they better and if so how?
Are G&G's, Classic Army and King arms any good?
I'm not worried about spending a bit extra to get something good.

Both G&G and Classic are very good!
I have 2 G&G Guns which come to you doing 350FPS stock, full metal.
I also have a classic army MP5 for CQB, which is in my opinion the best quality off the shelf gun I have owned. If I could afford it all my guns would be either G&G or Classic army. Hang on! They are!

G&P make the best colt's externally/stock M4 IMO, for a basic m4 ~ 230 usd. can't go wrong.

ICS rocks!
yep i 2nd that, if you want a M4 go ICS.
ICS M4s are pretty much the best you can get for M4s for a balance of performance, ease of servicing/maintenance and upgrading.
CA, G&G, G&P, KA, do have better finishing but they are no where as innovative in construction. They vary between mediocre and good, but maintenance is no where as good as easy as the ICS. G&G being the "best" overall while CA being on average between very good and the low end of "ok".
Dboy's external quality is a tad lower than the latter but they work well out of the box to as expected performance of the parts.
Star's M4, is a bit of a mystery. Not seen one per se.
Marui's are on the upper end of "good", the old conventional designs are "good" but missing metal receivers, default low power and missing reinforced mechs and gears. New M4s, not handled one, may be a surprise.
But in saying that, all M4s fall short of perfection. Dimensionally they are different from a real M4, and most weigh more than a real one. As for issues, it would take another page to detail the "out of the box" problems, and another page to detail the possible problems as soon as you start changing out 3rd party parts.
Ditch those sissy AEGs and get a M4 GBB. Once you fired one you won't go back to anything else.

So do M4's have more out of the box probs than other replicas? without going into too much detail can you give me an idea on why?
It has been suggested that a G36 are often reliable but i'm not that keen on the looks (no offence to those that have them, personal opinion).

most m4's are a replica of the tm m4. ics m4 is not, its a whole different mechbox design. only problems i see is that you have to buy ics mags as there not compatible with anyother, gen3 SRC is all re inforced and upgraded so it could take a m150 easily, only problem is the mechbox screws!. TBH all you need is a decent motor and a decent battery to make most m4' reliable,
TBH all you need is a decent motor and a decent battery to make most m4' reliable,
LOL. For how long, and in whose hands? :P
The reason M4s have more issues is the fact that aside from Marui, most other replicas are copies from marui, which is then copied by another company and so forth, so no one part fits exactly as the marui tolerances.
You might get a large percentage that works out of the box, but large percentage of those may have accuracy, alignment, dimensional issues, break after a short duration of use, and upgrade parts from other manufacturers will not be compatible.
But as Terence said, decent motor, battery is important, but getting good wiring set and knowing how to do little mods to make the gun operate as smoothly as possible rather than sounding like a dying cat, is what makes the gun reliable.

think of it this way ... Im a person who HATES M4s!!! everyone here knows that ... Im a guy who would rather have "ugly" guns like the AUGs, P90s and G36s over ANY type of M4 (aside from the Systema PTW, but who would spend that much $$$ on something thats upgrade-limited) ... the only M4 I would personally, ever, own is anything thats ICS out-of-the-box (or unless if I made the M4 from nuts-n-bolts-scratch coz I chose what goes into it) ... ICS is the most expensive M4-type there is ... Marui is only THE BEST in stock form (280fps max), but once you mod it up, SRC Gen3 (350-380fps) is still better in stock form than a lightly modded Marui
