AEG's really arent the best thing to start with....
You are better to look into a basic gas pistol untill you are certain you will enjoy the sport.....

AEGs are illegal to own. Without being a members of a club probably something like a GBB pistol is the best. They are cool to fire and generally most people carry them round as a backup.

LOL, what the hell is that kind of setup??
anyway, think the guy wants SERIOUS answers, haha
starting off with a Gas Blow Back pistol is a good idea. Doesn't hit in the wallet hard and has that WOW factor as you fire it as the slide comes back and you hear a nice popping sound each time you pull the trigger.
cost to run and maintain is pretty low so gives you a good feel for the game and what its like.
then once you have decided if airsoft is really for you and you have gotten tired of trying to take on everyone else with just your GBB + 1 mag then you would have a better idea and feel for what type of SEG you might want.
while this might sound like a long or stupid process the reason is that almost 99% of airsoft players have jumped into the deep end, bought loads of guns and gear and then realized later that 85% of what they have they either don't NEED or don't WANT or doesn't WORK for them.

Even a fixed slide gas pistol works well - socom in particular comes with a silencer which makes it extra cool
Hopefully now we have the society up and running (big ups to adler) SEG's will be cheaper and easier to come by, hopefully by the time I have some money set aside m4's will be cheap enough for me to justify buying two :P

Cool?? :(
Cool??????
Where is the fun in shooting a non-blow back pistol??
I mean; really!!! :o
If it wasnt for GBB i would have never got into airsoft. i only carry a rifle so it makes it look like i had the choice to shoot people with my pistol!!

Unfortunately I'm a perfect example of this :P Bought a bunch of guns on impulse which have been used once or twice because I've found they don't work for me and because of that I can't afford the gun that I know I love and really want :P
I couldn't agree more with just getting a GBB pistol to start off with and then if you find that you enjoy yourself doing a bit of research to find a SEG that you like. I'm sure that if you also saw something that you liked at a game and aksed the owner that they wouldn't mind letting you handle/have a bit of a look at it so you can get an idea if that's what you're after as well.
