what do you think about the gun?

actually
Your first thing to purchase (and be vetted) will need to be a Class A firearms license.
Once you have that.. then you will be fine..:)

ok but what do you think about the rifle is it a good starting rifle?

Its probably better to get something like a pistol to start off with. Cos most snipers are a bit too powerful for new players to use stafely

You might hurt others by shooting too close. Someone had to remind me a few times about engagement distances.

I am sure you have :) but thats not the point people are trying to make buddy.
The fact is Sniper rifles tend to be of quite high FPS(feet per second) and thus can be considered dangerous in a new persons hand.
The reasoning behind this has to do with basically experience and minimum engagement distance judgement. Most clubs won't even let you on the field with some thing like that for the first few months, Airsoft is about having fun and not hurting people.
You are indeed better of just getting a pistol first, but most importantly do not buy anything till you have secured your firearms licence and then attend a club game with the club closest to you and have a look at what people are using before spending any money on guns :)
you will make your funds go alot further if you have a look first and talk to some people.

Cant reinforce this enough
First purchase your 16 has to be your Firearms licence, its $125 but it'll cover your ass.
Also before you even consider buying anything more than a handgun come to a game and TRY THINGS OUT FIRST. Alot of people buy the sniper rifle first then realise its not exactly the best idea.

Don't buy anything (and I really mean anything, not even the cheapo safety glasses). Come to a game first and have a go at the various guns available and then decide. Fact is, trying to play a a sniper/designated marksman in airsoft isn't as easy as you think (and that's before we even discuss the maintanence/upgrade side of it).

being a Airsoft Sniper is not at all any fun ... even for most of the regulars here ... normally we then chose to be one after a certain amt of time (like maybe after years of playing??) when we get bored of being a regular grunt and want more of a challenge to get our kills on the field ... so as the previous posts suggests, get your 16+ license first before buying anything, then go see your respective club rep in your area so you can see what we have, go to your first game, then decide what gun you would like to get ... by that time, we would assume that you have got all the necessary funds to actually get anything that feels right for you after your first game and the club rep's show-n-tell presentation :D
and by the way, goggles are prefered over specs as they are compliant to OSH regulations regarding full eye coverage from any possible angle as an Airsoft projectile (ie: plastic BBs) are really tiny and is only 6mm round ... and i cant emphasise enuf, that said goggles needs to be able to stop a real steel 0.22cal projectile (ie: they must balistics compliant)

Uh, actually in no way do they have to stop a 0.22 calibre projectile. Any medium-strength safety goggles or glasses will be more than sufficient.
Also, the OSH Compliance regulations regard paintball, as we cant really be classed as paintball (I think there are discussions over the classifications going on now? correct me if i am wrong). I work as a toolmaker on a lathe with flying bits of hot metal going all around me and OSH Themselves say safety glasses are sufficient.
Saying that, EVERYBODY will attest towards good quality snug fitting safety glasses. Guarder C3's or C4's are a good choice and can be picked up for $50 respectively off Trademe every so often.

What about the safety goggles/glaases by 3M that go for around $10-15?

There is a little code or something on the side which states it good enough. A really good way of testing if they are good enough (I have done this to a newbies shitty goggle set when he said they would be fine. He was proven very wrong and packed a shitty for breaking his new "saftey goggles" :D) is to shoot them at point blank with the most powerful rifle on the field. If they dont break then sweet as.

Pretty good test there.
Long story short. You dont HAVE to go and spend $150 on goggles/glasses. Pick up something comfortable that fits you well - You'll be happier with it.

Yeh I use some sort of 30$ cheapy things that work great. I only use them for bush games but they can take over a 500fps gun at point blank range. Maybe someone from palmie can full me in on there name?

Your probably talking of the PELTOR goggles (IF they are goggles)
Any decent safety shop (And SOME* hardware stores) have a good selection of safety goggles/glasses. Anything by PELTOR is good for your buck, but definitely look around.
Just always remember to look at the tags. Your looking for ASNZ certified safety protective eyewear. Chinese cheap crap wont cut it.
*Edit*
and thats the Australia and New Zealand Safety Standards, not the forums ;)

3M safety goggles.
I tried it up to about 600fps at point blank

I took a 8 dollar set of warehouse safety goggles out for the first few months, shot them with a 600 fps K98 and it survived so i wasnt complaining.
Did leave a very slight dent which annoyed me enough to wanna replace them

The code is "ANSI Z87.1" eye protection impact standard. Most eye safety glasses will have the code etched. The Basic standard is usually suffice for airsofting (you need about 300-ish FPS on a .2g BB fired point blank to crack it), but if your goggles/safety glasses with interchangeable lense has ANSI Z87.1 etched on it they are High Impact rated, so they can take up a .2g BB at 700FPS, and the frame will need 1 J to break.

If you can get the camo go for it :) There arent laws stating you cant wear camoflage. Also, dive masks are NOT good, as they use tempered glass lenses that can and will shatter if they suffer a hard enough impact.

ok thanks. i have just had a little look on trade me and i have found some Police Special Force Type Tactical Goggles for $35 they have a description that states
* Frame is bi-raw material construction allows for a comfortable, well seated fit without the use of soft foam.
* Fins between of goggle and the face for air to go through, very breathable
* The exterior goggle is providing high resistance to impact. The interior frame is made of an elastic rubber, which is anti-allergenic and easy to clean.
* The lens is a high impact double coated thick polycarbonate that has been treated with an anti-fog coating on the interior and an anti-scratch coating on the exterior. The clear lens provides 100% UV absorption
is this what i am looking for or not?

I use and have done for a long time, the JT Spectra mask. It doesn't fog and it ensures that you keep your teeth and when you go to work on Monday you don't look like you're covered in pimples. One key disadvantage, its a tad difficult to use with helmets and J hats. Oh one other thing, if your a total poser you won't look cosha army.

Get a Guarder C4 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Hunting-shooting/Paintball/auction-146048163.htm?p=3). These will give you more than adequate protection for airsoft.
You want to avoid using goggles unless you are playing MOUT / CQC type games, purely because goggles always fog up. A wrap-around eyewear is usualy sufficient. Either that or go get a paintball mask with a fan (JT Spectre) or airsoft wire-mesh face mask. You'll suffer the brunt of the "Luke I am your father" jokes though.

A good idea would be getting Guarder C4's, but then buying scrim facenet material from Kiwi Disposals. Works very well as a face wrap/protection as it softens any facial hits by BB's, and still allows you to breathe while running.

This will save you alot of hassle in the future :) Most people that are getting interested in the sport go nutz and purchase stuff which within around 6 months of actually starting to play it will just sit in your corner as an expensive paper weight.
Get in contact with your local club and see if you can go down for a watchy until your of legal age to play :)
But welcome to the expensive sport of airsoft :)

Care to explain this shot of a 4RAR member in Sydney:

But too, notice how high they have to mount their reddots/APs to get a sighting.

That will probably be 1SASR with them using M4s. Those masks are about 1000aussie each as they are made of kevlar (my ex brother in law used to fly their Balckhawks) Luv the targets on their shoulders that badge stands out against the black nearly as much as Adlers bling badges-(and b4 u say it Dorian-the kiwi on my cap)

I don't suppose they would wear them to prevent being recognised, by any chance?
I'm not convinced that there would be any reason to wear a paintball mask. Do "terrorists" favour paintball for self-defence now? :)
I think a case of:
Comfort
airflow
recognition/anonymity
menace
SOME ballistic protection ....not a lot.. but some..

Well, actually, I know there are paintball masks out there with decent ballistic protection. From what I read one brand just took military materials to make their mask, and their lens was capable of stopping smaller bullets. A guy on an American paintball forum tested it and yes, the lens stopped a shot from an MP5. I'm no expert on the matter, so I don't actually know if thats possible or not, but thats what I read!
